
Matthew Phillip Prater, a placekicker for the National Football League’s Arizona Cardinals, was born on August 10, 1984. He is regarded as one of the best long-distance kickers in NFL history, and he currently holds the NFL record for most 50+ yard field goals in a career. From 2013 to 2021, he held the NFL record for the longest field goal (64 yards).
He was initially signed by the Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and played college football for UCF. He was released by the Denver Broncos after serving a suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The 2016 and 2017 campaigns with the Lions.
On May 4, 2006, the Detroit Lions signed Prater as an undrafted free agent. In a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, he converted field goals of 22, 44, and 48 yards. However, he had little chance of unseating experienced incumbent Jason Hanson, so he was later dismissed on August 27. He worked out for the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, but he spent the remainder of the season as a free agent.
